This paper identifies the range of significant factors which hamper Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students from achieving successful outcomes in high school and continue to disadvantage them in the workplace. Industry work placements for students at high school would overcome many of the barriers, such as a focus on academic subjects and didactic teaching styles, lack of culturally appropriate training and the lack of secondary schools in isolated areas, which sequentially lead to high unemployment rates.
