Investigation of TAFE teachers' perceptions of literacy demands of TAFE subjects: a genre-based approach

The literacy and numeracy demands of TAFE courses and the difficulties encountered by new TAFE students unable to cope with such demands are the subject of this publication. Participants generally agreed that the causes of such difficulties were numerous, stemming from a range of social, educational and personal factors. While it was recognised that many factors contributed to new TAFE students' literacy and numeracy difficulties, participants felt that before the issue could be tackled effectively, more needed to be known about the literacy demands of TAFE courses. The following project, then, is an attempt to address participants' requests for more information about the nature of TAFE courses.
