Did they see it the way I saw it?: a case study in peer and self assessment

The study evaluates the differences in interpretation between students and lecturer in peer and self evaluation of participatory performance in group or collaborative work. On completion of a course module that was the basis of the study, students were required to report on their experience of the collaborative project and to rate their own and their peers' performance as part of the group. This performance data was compared to the lecturer's assessment. The results showed that although some aspects of student learning within a module may be difficult for the lecturer to assess, the lecturer can facilitate students' making assessments themselves. Without this peer assessment, the collaborative experience is incomplete.
