Speech act analysing and its role in first language/culture maintenance

Language does not exist for its own sake nor does it exist solely as a means of communicating information; language can be used for a variety of purposes. When a language is no longer needed and is not used as a means of communication in daily social interactions, the people's knowledge of the language will become weaker and weaker. Therefore, in recent years, teaching of English to speakers of other languages has been going hand in hand with a strong desire to retain the ethnic languages in New Zealand.
