This article describes the language of teachers of polytechnic students in New Zealand. It is based on videotape data collected in 1991 from seven different classrooms representing a range of subjects with male and female teachers. One outcome of the project was a training video showing some of the purposes for which teachers use language. A study of the data attempts to answer questions about how teachers sound when they talk to classes. References are provided.
