The GRASP Program is a new approach to Aboriginal education. A collaboration between the AETU and General Education at the Lismore Campus, the program is very responsive to the individual needs of Aboriginal learners who have one of the following identified long term goals: (1) entering university or higher level vocational education and training (VET) courses; (2) establishing a community service; (3) working within the community in a leadership role; (4) accelerated career development; (5) establishing a business. The paper discusses ways in which the program varies from previous models of delivery: (1) training is targeted to deliver the competencies that the student has identified that he or she needs; (2) students are enrolled in modules as they gain competencies not beforehand; (3) students are interviewed to determine all prior learning and gaps in learning are targeted; (4) students are achieving major milestones in computing, written, interpersonal and researching skills.
