The New South Wales (NSW) Strategic Plan for Vocational Education and Training 2005-2008 sets out the strategic directions and priorities for vocational education and training (VET) over the next four years. It draws upon projections of industry, economic and occupational trends, demographic data, regional statistical profiles and data from commissioned research. It is also strongly informed by consultations with employers, employer associations and unions, training providers, community organisations and government agencies. The plan sets out three strategic directions for VET which will enable it to address the challenges facing the labour market. These are: (1) skilling the NSW workforce with the objective of building a skilled, innovative and responsive workforce; (2) skilling NSW communities and individuals with the objective of preparing people for work; (3) skilling the NSW VET community with the objective of ensuring that NSW has a high quality, flexible VET system. It outlines the economic, demographic and VET planning context in which the plan was prepared, which involves consideration of: skills shortages; skills gaps; new skills; ageing population; changing patterns of work; trends in VET participation; trends in the training market and ongoing commitments to state and federal priorities.
