Managing a virtual team

The behavioural aspects of a virtual work team involved in the development of online educational material are investigated. The objective is to develop group processes which may improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the team and alleviate some of the tensions which the team has previously experienced. The characteristics of a virtual team as opposed to others teams are membership distributed across multiple locations, work at different times, some members work for other organisations and considerable diversity within the team including different technical and discipline specialities. Membership of the team is not stable, with members entering and leaving the team at various times. Aspects of group dynamics included in this study are communication, trust, empowerment, equity, individual performance within the group, team formation, team cohesion and collaboration, the management of tension and conflict, politics and leadership.
