This article outlines the history, current directions and political agendas of competency-based education and testing (CBE/T) in vocational training in Canada. Canada was once a world leader in the field of vocational education but in the 1980s federal support was reduced, national frameworks were discarded and provincial approaches to vocational education were re-designed. However, recently the federal government has increased its funding of vocational training programs and CBE/T assessment integrated with literacy skills.
