Public education: between the rock and the hard place

In this article the author discusses the problems faced by public education providers as they balance the potentially conflicting demands of providing high quality basic education for all students and providing specialist individually tailored programs which will be essential to ensure the country's skill base keeps pace with the rest of the world. The use of technology and the role of the teacher are two related factors which are discussed as having the potential to allow the public education system to adapt and meet the needs of these conflicting demands.
