Taking the 'distance' out of law: the role of technology in breaking down the barriers of distance for OTEN law students

In this paper the authors examine the concept of distance and the ways in which law teachers might overcome the barriers of distance, both in the physical and metaphorical senses, for their students studying law. One of the problems they have found teaching law subjects at OTEN is the non completion and high attrition rates. Supplementing the traditional distance teaching methods of print based materials with face-to-face tutorials and technologies such as videoconferencing, satellite broadcasts and voicemail. Although these methods have met with some success the authors are now looking to the implementation of instruction by way of the Internet to overcome the barriers of distance for their students. The possibilities of the Internet are examined in some detail.
