Role of research in TAFE: a report on a national return to industry activity

This paper looks at a recent 'return to industry' activity. The focus of that activity was to study changes that have occurred in the child care industry in the past few years. A major aim was to prepare training material for TAFE Child Studies teachers that could be used in conjunction with syllabi written before many of those changes were introduced. During this experience, it was discovered that there seemed to be organisational impediments to the use and dissemination of research results. Issues discussed are: attitudes to research within TAFE; in a competitive environment, what is relevant research in the vocational education and training sector; and what strategies could TAFE put in place to effectively use results of research projects like this one.
