NSW TAFE is reported to have introduced the study of management in Australia when it offered supervision as part of its program in the Business School over 50 years ago. Today NSW TAFE continues to develop and offer management related programs. Over the years, management programs were developed that had as their targets employees of medium and larger organisations. Smaller organisations were not recognised. Yet to ignore small organisations is not realistic, as currently some 96 percent of private organisations in Australia may be classified as small. This research paper looks at a number of issues regarding NSW TAFE programs in management and small business and is based on two studies, one conducted in 1995 and the other, in 1996.
