Implementing flexible delivery for students with disabilities: profits and problems

The aim of the FlexiModel project is to increase access for students with disabilities in certain contexts. Various methodologies in action research identified approaches to open learning using existing materials, and also the competencies of the open learning facilitator in such an environment. The pilot has students undertaking various self-paced courses through distance education and faculty open learning situations, coming together as a 'class' on how to learn using self-paced packages. The rehabilitation community is showing acceptance through increased enrolments and by reimbursement of costs for flexibility not previously available. However, the pilot has identified administrative problems which will continue to plague new approaches until such systems allow for the flexibility increasingly demanded by clients.
