A central problem in case study research is determining how representative the case is of the larger group it is supposed to reflect. To address this problem, a researcher needs to know the characteristics of the larger grouping. When case study research is carried out on TAFE NSW students, enrolment data can be used to profile student characteristics in individual courses, in an industry group, or in an occupational category. Knowing how an individual case might be similar to, or different from, the group the case represents is important in case study selection and data interpretation. This paper describes how data from the TAFE NSW enrolment form was used to reveal gender and equity characteristics for students in industry groups, sub-groups, and courses for use in a study of the patterns of teaching and learning of TAFE students in predominantly lower, socio-economic status (SES) groupings.
