University of Western Sydney (UWS) Macarthur has established the Aboriginal Rural Education Program (AREP) to help indigenous students who may feel marginalised and excluded in tertiary education in New South Wales. AREP is a part-time study program conducted in five two-week residential courses per year. Students come from all over the State and typically complete the requirements of a three-year full time degree program in five years. As well, an Aboriginal centre, the Macarthur Aboriginal Liaison Unit (MALU) was established to provide a place where students can get tutorial support, bridging programs and other assistance with their studies. Indigenous students undertaking the Bachelor of Teaching are successfully utilising both AREP and the MALU Centre.
