This article outlines present economic and social changes which will have an effect on schooling in the next decade. For example, economic globalisation and its demand for an improvement in our competitive position through productivity will have definite implications for schooling. Changes in work organisation from traditional hierarchies to flat structures with collaborative teams will mean that schools will have to provide a better underpinning in key competencies and generic skills. Predicted changes in the distribution of jobs across industries and the dramatically increasing post-compulsory retention rate are also considered.
