Survey of 1980 Pre-Apprenticeship Students in NSW Technical Colleges

A questionnaire survey of 1648 preapprenticeship students was carried out. Of the 72% who responded, 21% had withdrawn from the course during the year. Of the remaining 51% of respondents 71% were apprenticed, 15% were employed but not apprenticed, 3% were full-time students and 12% were unemployed. Surveys since 1977 have shown an increase in the number of apprenticed students, a decrease in the proportion employed but not apprenticed and a decrease in the proportions of those studying full-time and unemployed. The course was passed by 92% of respondents and 6% failed. In March 1981, 69% were apprenticed in the trade of their course, 5% were employed in the same area as their course, 11% were unemployed, 6% were apprenticed in other areas, 7% were employed in other areas and 2% were full-time students.
