This document was prepared jointly by the European Education Information Network (EURYDICE) and the European Centre for the Development of Vocational Training (CEDEFOP). It is an updated and extended document following the style of the 1991 report and describing the education and initial vocational training systems for young people in the 15 Member States plus Iceland and Norway. It is in seventeen sections - one for each country - and the information is presented in a consistent way. In almost all cases the first chapter gives brief information on the country concerned and a description of the basic principles affecting the education and training systems. The following chapters examine the various levels of schooling according to the national situation. The information is supported by diagrams and, whilst no direct comparison or evaluation is made, certain patterns or trends common to several countries emerge - some of them outlined briefly in the introduction.
