The New Zealand government aims to strengthen adult and community education (ACE) through quality assurance, a new funding framework and professional development for the ACE sector. The ‘ACE professional development strategy and action plan 2006-2010’, developed in consultation with the sector, provides an approach to professional development that acknowledges and builds on existing skills within the ACE sector. The strategy is aimed at integrating professional development into ACE practice at every level over the next five years. It identifies four main approaches to ACE professional development and contains an action plan to prioritise activities. The four main approaches identified are: (1) the development of a sector-led working group that oversees, coordinates and monitors the implementation of the strategy; (2) the formation of a core group of people to take a linking role in the sector; (3) the identification of ACE skills and competencies requiring professional development; and (4) building on ACE Networks and conferences.
