Curriculum responsiveness in FET colleges

This book contributes to building an understanding of the complex challenges facing curriculum development in further education and training (FET) colleges in South Africa. It reviews literature to look at how education and training are linked to employment and the economy and at current debates and factual evidence on how to translate the needs of industry and employers into meaningful changes in the curriculum. Special attention is given to lessons learned and problems experienced in other countries that are applicable to the current South African context. The book is presented in six chapters: chapter one provides a historical perspective on FET curriculum, examining the origins of technical and vocational education and training (TVET) in South Africa; chapter two explores some of the debates that lie behind educational policy reforms in many countries to provide an overall view of educational change and the demands placed on educational institutions and their staff; chapter three examines relevant literature on the preparation for self-employment; the focus of chapter four is on the 'what' and 'how' of curriculum delivery in FET colleges or their equivalent in other countries, looking at conceptual arguments about the nature of the relationship between theory and practice; chapter five looks at the role of language and communicative competence in the teaching-learning process in a multilingual environment, focusing on practical lessons learnt by countries that are further along the path of FET implementation, but also reviewing evidence from South Africa; and the final chapter brings together a number of themes to provide suggestions for possible ways to meet future curriculum challenges.
