This paper was presented for discussion at the Second International Congress on Technical and Vocational Education 'Lifelong learning and training: a bridge to the future' held in Seoul, Republic of Korea, 26-30 April 1999. It outlines the geographic, social, economic, governmental and political environment of the Solomon Islands and then describes in more detail the structure and nature of the technical and vocational education system. It includes a discussion of the role of Rural Training Centres, the types of courses offered and a proposed upgrading project for the centres.
