This chapter discusses the importance of local partnerships to welfare-to-work policy. The main potential advantages of local partnerships are identified. There are many different partnership models for bringing together local actors to design and deliver policies in the field of economic and social development. The most important aspect of all of these different models is that the partnership model is manageable and fits the purpose. This chapter highlights some key lessons for the operation of welfare-to-work partnerships and examines the role of the private sector. The setting up of the New Deal partnership in Wearside, United Kingdom and the approach of the Welfare-To-Work Partnership in the United States are examined as local partnership case studies.
