Critique of NVQs and GNVQs

This chapter discusses the fact that, despite the enormous amount of funding directed into the vocational education system structure in the last decade, there remains confusion not only within the system, but also about its overriding aims. The author discusses the National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) and the General National Vocational Qualifications (GNVQs) and their aim to emphasise the importance of standards and ensure that the system is employer-led, and geared to the nature and levels of performance required by them. It outlines some of the main problems with the structure of the system and then discusses the GNVQs and some of the areas in which they have failed, such as the low take up rate. It also discusses the Beaumont Review, the Capey Review and the Dearing Review in relation to the effectiveness of GNVQs and the NCVQ system as a whole.
