This article appears in Chapter 2 - Re-engineering, which presents some options on how to re-engineer technician education and training (TET) systems and institutions. The author stresses the importance of Colombo Plan Staff College (CPSC) member countries developing their TET systems in a collaborative way to upgrade skills and market their products and services to the developed countries as a means of generating employment. He explores various areas of cooperation and develops a rationale which gives a priority to transforming unskilled or semi-skilled workers into self-employable and competent entrepreneurs. Soni suggests a number of strategies, in six broad categories, for different TET systems to consider and asserts that there is a need to develop an international task force to identify competent professionals from the institutions of different countries to make appropriate submissions to governments. He concludes that effective distance education using interactive instruction/training software is essential in the current economic climate to develop individualised instruction and self-learning.
