Visionary leadership: not only in their minds

This article appears in Chapter 1 - Transforming, which deals with various concepts of leadership in the context of technician education and training (TET). McCaig begins by examining the concept of leadership and the pitfalls in assuming that certain characteristics will automatically produce an effective leader. He asserts that effective leaders inspire people to follow them voluntarily because they believe that the leader has the skills necessary to help them to achieve their goals. McCaig insists that these skills are bound by time and task: different situations require different leaders. He goes on to look at leadership in formal organisations, such as TET institutions and, even though there are few obviously shared goals, he insists that there is still a need for visionary leadership. He identifies issues about training for leadership and skills required in the TET environment and explores ways in which visionary leaders might deal with the internal and external issues of current change, with an emphasis on innovation.
