This paper describes the professional competency of teachers of professional subjects in junior colleges. It is based on a literature review, interviews with experienced college teachers, an expert seminar, a sample survey of college personnel, a statistical analysis and prioritisation of competencies. Eleven fields of the teaching profession were identified. They were: awareness of college education, devotion to work, curriculum development, compilation and selection of teaching materials, instructional preparation, instructional implementation, instructional evaluation, management of exercise/workshop and classroom, student counselling, promotion of external affairs and promotion of cooperation between the industry and academics. There are 54 competency items in the eleven fields, which can be used by the education authorities for setting objectives, arranging curriculum and employing teachers in junior colleges.
