This chapter provides a description of the main changes in the youth labour market and in the transitions from school to work over the last two decades. The authors concentrate on the current conditions under which young people negotiate their transitions from school to work. They take the view that, although there has been a growth in the diversity of routes taken, class and gender remain crucial in determining young people's experiences of education, training and labour market entry.
