Business of learning: staff and student experiences of further education in the 1990s

Further education is one of the largest industries in the United Kingdom and further education colleges provide an essential connection between school and work or higher education. Further education will play a vital role in determining the future of education and training and realising the government's vision of a learning society. This monograph presents research into the experience of teaching and studying in further education through a detailed examination of the operations of two contrasting colleges of further education. The study contains in-depth research based on numerous interviews with managers, teachers and students. The authors examine the wide social and cultural context in which further education exists from these varying perspectives. The research contributes to the debate about whether the function of further education is merely to enable a greater number of students to go on to higher education, or to extend generalised knowledge to wider sections of the population than ever before
