This booklet provides an overview of changes to the South African educational system and the implementation of the national curriculum - Curriculum 2005. The Department of Education began reviewing the curriculum in 1995 with key stakeholders involved in the process of reform. The goal of the review was to introduce a new curriculum, with effect from 1998, based on the ideal of lifelong learning for all South Africans. The new curriculum aims to integrate education and training, incorporating a view of learning which rejects a rigid division between academic and applied knowledge, theory and practice, and knowledge and skills. This booklet explains the reasons for changing the system, outlines the National Qualifications Framework (NQFs), examines the differences between the old and new system, defines outcomes-based education, discusses the role of language in education and looks at the role of the teacher and the role of the parent in education.
