In this paper, the author examines the impact of research on practice and suggests that research influences education systems in three ways. Research can describe systemic patterns and phenomena, it can facilitate understanding of educational processes, and it can clarify and guide the roles of those involved in educational systems. The paper provides some specific examples from the United States of America (USA) of research impacting on an education system and explains the horizontal and vertical dimensions of research impact. The author then debates the level of responsibility research should take for the process of educational change and concludes by summarising ways by which research can affect educational development and how those involved can maintain the impact of research in the future.
