This paper is one of a series on international education research which examines the work of international organisations involved in educational research. The aim of these papers is to highlight the programs and policies of these organisations and draw out common issues arising across nations. This paper focuses on the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA), a network of research institutions representative of 53 educational systems and dedicated to conducting international comparative studies to assess educational achievement. The studies serve to describe the status of educational systems for policy makers and educators, provide benchmarking data and cross-national research, and monitor the quality of education. The author explains IEA's operations and studies and highlights some possible future directions.
