Nature and function of educational research

In this paper, the author presents a detailed analysis of the nature of educational research and its relationship with policy-making and educational practice. The discussion begins with a general definition of research and its various sub-categories of research and development activities, then examines how these definitions specifically apply to the field of education and which research and development should fall into this field. The author then goes on to describe three examples of current Australian educational research that have strong connections with policy-makers and practitioners. This example, the previous analysis of educational research and development, and the outcomes of the reviews of educational research in Australia, provide the basis for the concluding remarks on strategies for strengthening educational research and development, and improving the links between research, policy-making and practice.
