CAFAM's continuing adult education program (CAFAED): a human development project

The Caja de Compensacion Familiar (Family Subsidy Fund, CAFAM) is a private, non-profit enterprise into which all employers pay maintenance contributions to fund social services for their employees in areas such as health, housing and education. The Department of Continuing Education is the administrative arm of CAFAM responsible for its Continuing Adult Education Program (CAFAED). CAFAED's philosophy is that adult education can be used as a strategy for human development which in turn provides the basis for a country's socio-economic development. CAFAED addressed adult basic education as the underlying cause of educational, social and economic disadvantage, and developed a pedagogic model appropriate to adult learning styles. The author describes this pedagogic model and the flexible elements of the learning process. The paper concludes with some evaluative comments related to the conditions that facilitate the implementation of the program, outcomes for the participants, the evidence of human and social development as a result of participation, the program's social impact, barriers to success and future implications for adult continuing education.
