This article describes the Adult Education Teacher Training Course (AETTC) launched in Kenya by the Department of Adult Education in 1984. The innovative project was designed to train adult educators who were already employed and teaching adult classes, using distance education. The course is based on the goals of national education and aims to provide more equal access to educational opportunities. The distance education model consisted of centralised functions related to effective operation and localised functions designed to give the learner control of the educational process. The centralised functions comprised the creation of study materials, assessment of assignments and staff training. The localised functions included assessment of learning needs and curriculum development. The course was based on the existing Inservice Teacher Training Course (ITTC) which used an innovative methodology. The author describes the development and refinement of an existing adult education curriculum, the mode of delivery, the affects of the relationships between the collaborating institutions on the progress of the project, operational aspects, course assessment and funding. In conclusion, some student performance results, implementation problems and lessons learnt, are discussed.
