New technology has created significant changes in the workplace and increased the demand for high-level skills, such as creative thinking, problem-solving, negotiation, and more technical and scientific knowledge. Demographic change and the economy's need for labour, has resulted in an increasing number of workers being drawn from traditionally neglected groups such as women, minorities and younger people from 16-24 years of age.
