Nursing student information network: fostering tutorial communications using an electronic mail list

This paper discusses the development and implementation of a student-based computer information network between students of two nursing colleges. An electronic mail list was established. The project demonstrates that an email list can be used to communicate effectively with and inform geographically distant student nurses. It also shows that most students were dependent on access to computers at colleges. According to the initial outcome there was little motivation to join the email list, students were not eager to start discussing clinical nursing, students preferred to talk about teaching and learning theoretical subjects and students replied to each other personally rather than to the list. Specific training in how to use email and netiquette is seen as the next step.
