In this paper, Saw, of the Centre for Distance Education at the Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), and his colleagues, describe the results of a study of the changing perceptions of East Malaysian distance learners studying for a degree at USM. The study focuses firstly on students' perceptions of their own study skills, where students noted positive changes in their skills as learners. Secondly, it looked at the impact of their studies on other areas of their life, including their social obligations, recreational activities, relation with their spouse, immediate family and their wider family (parents and siblings), health, finances, work, and religion. The findings are placed within the context of both East Malaysian culture and society, and other studies on the transition from a non-student to student status.
