International briefing 1: training and development in the Netherlands

The international briefings series comprises individual reports on training and development in the Netherlands, United Kingdom, Germany and Australia and aims to promote an international dialogue in the field of training and development and to provide a forum for the reporting of high quality research, analysis and debate. This article discusses training and development issues in the Netherlands, providing basic data about the country and information on public policy, strategy and infrastructure. An overview of corporate policies and strategies is outlined and training and development in practice is examined. The article concludes with a brief focus on academic work, sources of information and networks in the training and development field.

Training and development in Germany

This article is the third international briefing report - others focus on the Netherlands (TD/INT 60.05), the United Kingdom (TD/INT 60.107) and Australia (TD/INT 60.66). The authors present a brief account of the training and development in Germany. They explain the background of the Dual System of apprenticeship training, the process undertaken by students and the responsibilities of other bodies. They also describe the legislative infrastructure and recent changes to public policy. Concerns about continuing education and training are highlighted and the importance of developing new training strategies for different sectors of both industry and commerce is emphasised. The article concludes with helpful sources of information and important networks in training and development.
