Technical and vocational education (TVE) is the most neglected area of the education sector in Sub-Saharan Africa. In response, UNESCO BREDA (the Regional Office for Education in Africa) organised a meeting of participants from countries in this region, to discuss this situation on the basis of earlier studies carried out by, or on behalf of, UNESCO. This brief report provides an overview of the meeting objectives, organisation and sub-themes, and summarises the trends in the discussion around the following issues: future challenges to TVE; improving systems providing lifelong education and training; innovating the education and training process; access to TVE for all individuals; the changing roles of government and other stakeholders in TVE; and reinforcing international cooperation in TVE.
