This paper reports on the outcome of discussion at the Fifth International Conference on Adult Education (CONFINTEA V) organised by the UNESCO Institute for Education (UIE) in cooperation with UNEVOC and held in Hamburg, Germany, from 14-18 July 1997. The conference theme of adult learning and the changing world of work focused on four areas of principles and practices that connect adult education to the world of work: the real nature of the world of work; the importance of all levels of education in preparing individuals to succeed in the world of work; the role of government in the provision and development of adult education; and the social responsibility of adult education. The author summarises the outcomes of discussion by conference participants around twelve questions organised within these four areas. In conclusion, the author stresses the need for the many stakeholders involved in adult education to coordinate their efforts in order to move further towards the provision of effective continuing education for the world of work.
