As a result of rapid advances in technology and globalisation, the current vocational and technical education system needs to be reorganised to ensure that a competitive and skilled workforce is produced according to the needs of the labour market. The aim of this article is to focus on new trends and to make recommendations for secondary vocational and technical education. Areas such as organisational flexibility, cooperation between business, industry and education, coordination between formal education levels, formal-informal integration and lifelong learning, curriculum, assessment, career guidance and qualified teachers and administrations are all discussed. Vocational technical education (VOTEC) needs to evolve if it is to play a critical role in developing the capabilities of the workforce.
