This study was designed to examine the effectiveness of the college prep program in the preparation of students for admission into, and successful completion of, college qualifications. A qualitative case study approach was used focusing on high school graduates who had succeeded in entering a college program, and investigating their secondary and postsecondary experiences. Findings indicated that the traditional college prep program was effective for about one third of enrolled students, semi-effective for about one fifth, and ineffective for about one half. Some alternatives to this program are briefly discussed and it is suggested a vocational education integrated with academic college preparation is required by an increasing percentage of high school students to ensure their success in two-year postsecondary technical education.
