Export performance and the role of innovation, skills and low-wage competition

This brief article is in English and German. It summarises a research project, carried out by the authors in 1997-98, that compared the relative export performance of British and German manufacturers of surgical instruments. The project investigated the relationship between export performance and factors such as the skill level of the workforce, investment in research and development, and competition from low-wage countries. The research indicated that the skill level of the workforce was a key determinant of export success followed closely by research and development and its related factor of innovation. It is envisaged that a detailed report of the findings of this research project will be published by the Anglo-German Foundation (AGF) in June 1999.
