This paper describes three major initiatives of the United Kingdom (UK) government in vocational education and training (VET) in Scotland. These initiatives underpin a diverse range of VET programmes that have been unleashed to combat the unemployment problem that arose in Scotland as the transition was made from an economy based on heavy manufacturing and ship-building to one dominated by tourism and services.
