Combining school and work: new pathways for learning in Australia

This paper describes institutions and pathways of school-to-work transition in Australia. The paper argues that courses in cooking and sheep husbandry, among many other new vocational courses, would not have found favour among curriculum developers in the past and that the new acceptance of workplace learning reflects significant changes in the nature of adolescent employment, education and training, from a position of a high availability of low skill jobs for adolescents and a low school retention rate, to the opposite.
