- Research and the changing landscape of education for work
-
In this address the author highlights the debate on what is considered to be worthwhile research in relation to education for work. An analysis of historical changes in the nature of education for work is used to suggest a future direction for research. The analysis explores three major dimensions on which the nature of education for work has changed. These are discussed in relation to the kinds of education for work that have evolved with society through the pre-industrial, industrial and information ages. From this analysis of history the author argues that old forms of preparing people for work continue to be relevant but change in terms of when and how they are applied. The research community should therefore support research into both the evolution of old practices and the development of new practices. The American Vocational Education Research Association (AVERA) will take the role of a vehicle for providing such support.
