A critical theory paradigm can be useful for examining the complex array of sociocultural, ideological, and institutional forces underlying assumptions about work and labour. The authors highlight several ethnographic studies on identity formation among working-class youths, analyzing insights that might lead vocational educators to construct new investigations in the field. Those who practice a critical research approach are committed to democratising schools and workplaces, altering inequities in the topics they address.
