This study evaluated career magnet high schools in New York City using a large-scale experimental design and an intensive interview study. The experimental design examined quantitative outcomes for thousands of students. The experiment was made possible by a unique feature of the admissions procedure for these specialized high schools. Each career magnet school was directed by mandate to admit 50 per cent of its students by lottery. Thus, a randomized sample of 'lottery winners' and a comparison group was formed. The qualitative component of this evaluation also used a randomized sample of lottery winners and a comparison group drawn from the same student population. Quantitative and qualitative findings described some educational benefits and positive impact on students' career development.
