This quarterly journal provides a forum for the scholarly work of vocationalists. It publishes refereed articles dealing with research and research-related topics in vocational education. The editorial provides an overview of this special issue which features voices of students in career-oriented programs. The guest editor Victor M. Hernandez-Gantes presents an introduction outlining the four articles which feature work undertaken by the National Center for Research in Vocational Education (NCRVE). These articles include: School climate in emerging career-oriented programs: students' perspectives / Victor M. Hernandez-Gantes, L. Allen Phelps, John Jones and Thomas Holub; The impact of career magnet high schools: experimental and qualitative evidence / Amy L. Heebner; Factors that influence the career development of African-American and Latino youth / Teresa A. Fisher and Mildred B. Griggs; Students' indicators of quality in emerging school-to-work programs / L. Allen Phelps, Victor M. Hernandez-Gantes, John Jones, Dorothy Sanchez and Alejandro H. Nieri. In the final section Frank T. Hammons provides a synthesis of the four feature articles and outlines issues of importance highlighted by the research for both practitioners and researchers. - School climate in emerging career-oriented programs: students' perspectives

The increasing diversity in America's student population and the future work force poses enormous implications for preparing these individuals for productive employment in today's learning-intensive and technology-intensive work place. Findings of a national longitudinal study of students enrolled in both secondary and postsecondary career-oriented programs (e.g., programs featuring Tech Prep, integrated academic-vocational learning, career academies) are presented. Based on a modified grounded theory approach to research, interviewed students identified school climate as an important aspect of these programs characterized by four critical elements: a supportive environment, exposure and access to a variety of curriculum opportunities, a safe environment conducive to learning, and a culture of high expectations for students and teachers. Findings focus exclusively on the experiences and perspectives of students from a variety of backgrounds, who are enrolled in five high school programs representing different curriculum orientation (e.g., business, manufacturing, science and technology), location, and size.
